Annette (00:31):

Hi, thanks again for joining me today. Today. I want to talk to you about virtual networking, even when times aren't challenging as they are today, and you can get out and meet people at networking events. It's still a good idea to know how to network virtually. So one of the best places to do that is social media. And I want to talk to you about four different platforms, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and also Instagram. So Twitter, there are a lot of interesting people on Twitter. There are a lot of recruiters there that you can follow and interact with. You can also participate in a Twitter chat. There are lists of Twitter chats online. All you have to do is Google them. There are also many recruiters contingency and or so corporate recruiters who post jobs on Twitter. So if you see a job, you can certainly interact with the person posting the job.

Annette (01:27):

The second one is Facebook. Facebook is a great place where you can reconnect with old friends. You can meet new friends. I keep my Facebook, my personal Facebook page, very private. I have less than a hundred Facebook friends, but many people have, you know, hundreds or even a thousand Facebook friends. So it is a good place to meet people. You can also use Facebook groups. There are a lot of different groups out there. There are career groups. There are industry groups. You can use your imagination. A lot of alumni associations also have Facebook groups, so where you can meet people and interact with them. Many companies, these days also have Facebook pages where they post jobs and you may find recruiters there. The next one is LinkedIn, which of course you're all familiar with because you know, it's the primary business networking platform. Also a great place to reconnect with friends, former colleagues, former bosses people from your college alumni group, you can connect with recruiters and people who are working for your target employers.

Annette (02:39):

You can look for things in common. For example, you may have gone to the same university, or you may have worked at a same company previously. You can do searches for people with that criteria on LinkedIn. And when you do send them a connection request, you can mention what you have in common. One thing I'd to mention when you do send someone a connection request, make sure to tell them a reason why you want to connect with them. Don't just use the generic. I'd like to add you to my LinkedIn network, but add some other information. Give them a reason to connect with you. Also, you can follow people on LinkedIn without connecting asking them for a connection request. You can follow them and interact with them. Comment on their posts, comment on an article that they share on a status update. This gives you the opportunity to get to know them a little bit.

Annette(03:33):

And for them to get to know you a little bit as well. LinkedIn groups is another place where you can sort of meet and interact with people. They're not quite as active in some cases as they used to be, but there are still a lot of groups available on LinkedIn. There are industry groups and you may find recruiters there. There's groups for people in marketing and people in accounting and finance and people in public relations. There were just tons of them out there. Look for ones that are in your industry or people that have the position that you are targeting right now, you can also find college and alumni groups and also job seeker groups. There are many, many career groups out there where you can find a career professionals. You can get resume advice, LinkedIn advice. You can sometimes find recruiters there as well.

Annette (04:30):

The last platform I want to mention is Instagram. Instagram is becoming even more of a, a business platform for some companies, and it's not unusual for companies to post jobs there. So follow the companies that you're interested in an Instagram as well. One thing it's important to remember when you're working on social media, you don't want to just sort of set it and forget it. Put your LinkedIn profile up, set up a Twitter account and then never use it. You want to be active on it on LinkedIn. For example, you can post status updates to keep you top of mind with your connections. You can post articles that you may have written on LinkedIn yourself, or perhaps you have a blog that you're writing on. You can post articles that are of interest to people in your community or people in your industry. If you're wondering where to find content, to share with your connections, it's easy to sign up with a content aggregator.

Annette (05:34):

These are sites where you can follow industries, or you can follow certain media outlets. For example, I follow career business and technology, which gives me a lot of information to share with my group of people. I use Feedly, but there are other options as well, including pocket, and also Google news. Staying active will keep you top of mind with your connections. You can't underestimate the quality of connections you can make with people that you meet on social media. I have several good friends, colleagues of mine, who I met some on Twitter, some on LinkedIn. Over a decade ago, I become quite good friends with many of them while I haven't met them all face to face. I have met most of them on some kind of a video concert conference call. I also have one really good friend who I met on LinkedIn. She and I were both in the career industry at the time.

Annette (06:36):

And I sent her a connection request. She reconnected with me and we had one lunch. And from there we've been friends for 10 years and her really she's one of my closest friends. Another thing to consider is virtual meetings. Many meetups today have gone of virtual instead of meeting face to face. They are holding them through, go to meeting and zoom and other video platforms where you really have a chance to see people face to face and interact with them. Some alumni associations are doing that as well. I participated in a career fair with one of my former universities just in April. So people got to meet me there and I got to meet a lot of people myself. When you do connect with people, remember to actually connect with them, you know, follow up with an email at the minimum try to get in a phone call if you can better. Yet video is the best way to meet because it's the closest thing that you have to face to face. The three platforms I'm most familiar with are zoom, WebEx, and go to meeting which is also go to webinar. Many of them right now have free memberships. So make sure to get out there, reconnect with old friends, old colleagues, connect with new people and invite them to have coffee with you on a video conference. Thanks again for joining me today. Good luck with your job search
